Welcome to the Nanoscale Heat Transfer Lab in the Mechanical Engineering department at Rice University! Under the direction of Prof. Geoff Wehmeyer, we use experiments and theory to understand how heat is transported in nanomaterials and to design improved thermal systems.
Our research is motivated by society’s demand for renewable energy sources, energy-efficient information and lighting technologies, and improved thermal management of electronics and batteries. Heat transfer plays a critical role in these applications; for example, heat must be evacuated from electronic and optoelectronic devices, and thermal control is of paramount importance in energy conversion.
We bring together mechanical engineering, nanoscience, and material science to solve these thermal problems. By understanding the mechanisms of heat transfer at the nanoscale, we demonstrate new thermal capabilities and enable next-generation thermal technologies.
